Bells Palsy is the diagnosis when all other possible reasons for paralysis have been discounted and no known cause can be found.

Facial palsy is the diagnosis when a reason for the paralysis has been identified and diagnosed.

Some possible causes for Facial Palsy are:

  • Bacterial infections such as Lyme disease
  • Pressure on the facial nerve possibly due to a cyst or tumour
  • HIV
  • Middle ear infection
  • Facial trauma
  • Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome
  • M?bius syndrome
  • Guillain-Barr? Syndrome
  • Sarcoidosis
  • Leukemia

Do bear in mind that in the majority of cases we do simply have Idiopathic Bells Palsy.
